In Term 1, 2013 the BUILD Project begun. The Build Project-Yarning for Wellness, is a project where a group of Indigenous youth came together at the Goldfields Institute of Technology to construct a picnic table under the direction of the General Construction lecturer, Kath Brown.
Once the table was built the ideas and concepts we had formed over the term were put into one piece of artwork that the youth drew and then burned on the top of the table. All this was done with the assisstance of Jennell Reynolds, a local Indigenous Artsist and Allira Henderson, the Youth Arts Officer from the Cannery Arts Centre.
The purpose of this project was to encourage yarning for mental wellness. To talk about what we dream about, what is really happening in our world and how to get where we want to be as well as the value of belonging in our community.
All parties involved had a great time and agree the finished result looks fantastic!
If you want to have a look for yourself, go down to the RAW Art Exhibition at the Cannery Arts Centre over the July school holidays 2013!
